Naming a new pet is a BIG decision and most of us take that responsibility very seriously. We research popular names, trendy names, historical names and then canvas family and friends for opinions and favorites. We decide, then reconsider, change our minds and finally choose what we hope is the perfect moniker for our special friend.
But how about the rest of the world? How do others choose a name? According to Rover.com (and cited by the AKC): in 2016, 53% of dog owners have named their dog after a movie or TV character, book character, or celebrity. Check out Rover’s National Top Ten List and just for fun, we’ve added Denver’s favorites — an almost identical line-up.

If you don’t feel like going with the flow, here’s some inspiration to find that perfect name.
BOOKS and ARTICLES about names (both people names and pet names) are on line and in every bookstore. Sit back, relax and see if any of the options fit your pooch.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES can often suggest a great name.
KID’s CHOICE is a tried and true method and it relieves stress on a parent. Just keep in mind that depending on the age and gender of the child, you’re very likely to end up with a name that matches the color of the dog OR the name of a favorite Disney princess.
PERSONALITY TRAITS and PASSIONS are sometimes captured in a single word. If there’s something about your dog that stands out, something he loves or hates, use it as inspiration.
UNIQUE & CREATIVE names may take a little more thought, but a one-of-a-kind tag might be that special something you’re looking to find. The name of a popular tea seems to be the perfect fit for this little teacup doggie.
Over all, keep in mind that how a name sounds is an important factor to consider. Is the new name easily distinguished from other names in the family? Is the new name easy to say and easy for doggie to recognize? Would you be embarrassed to yell the name in a crowded park?
Don’t get frustrated. There’s no wrong answer. All your dog really cares about is your love and commitment (and as many hugs as you can provide).
