Summer Survival: Keep Your Dog Cool, Safe, and Happy

Summer Survival: Keep Your Dog Cool, Safe, and Happy

By: Hike Doggie

Summertime is in full swing and that means longer days and higher temperatures! As the summer heat intensifies, it’s crucial to ensure our furry friends stay comfortable and safe. Dogs are especially vulnerable to high temperatures, which can lead to dehydration, heatstroke, and other serious health issues. Keep your dog cool during the summer, this not only enhances their well-being but also makes outdoor activities more enjoyable for both of you. In this blog post, we’ll explore simple and effective tips to help your dog beat the heat and stay happy and healthy all summer long.

Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated is vital for dogs, especially during the scorching summer months. Adequate water intake helps regulate their body temperature, preventing overheating and heatstroke, which can be life-threatening. Hydration also supports essential bodily functions, including digestion, circulation, and nutrient absorption. Dehydration in dogs can lead to serious health issues such as kidney failure, urinary tract infections, and even death. Ensuring your dog has constant access to fresh, clean water and encouraging regular drinking habits are crucial steps in keeping them healthy, active, and safe during the hot summer days.  Generally, a dog should drink 1/2 oz to 1 oz of water per pound of body weight. Here are some ways you can make sure your pup is staying hydrated!

Ensure your dog always has access to fresh water

While at home, make sure your doggie’s water bowl is always refreshed! If your pup is home alone for extended periods, a refillable water dispenser or extra large water bowl should hold more than enough water to keep your pup hydrated while you are out.

Always carry fresh water with you

Carrying water for your dog on hot days is essential to keep them hydrated and prevent heat-related illnesses. Dogs can quickly become dehydrated in high temperatures, leading to serious health issues like heatstroke. By having water readily available, you ensure your dog can stay cool and refreshed during walks or outdoor activities. Regular water breaks help regulate their body temperature and maintain their overall well-being, making hot days safer and more enjoyable for both of you. There are lots of portable water dispensers on the market nowadays, or you can always go with the classic collapable water bowl!

Be aware of where your dog is drinking from

That lovely lake, stream, river, or creek that you love to take your pup to swim at may look clear and clean but in reality, has more contaminants than you know. Keep your pup healthy by always packing fresh, clean water from a source you can trust.

Timing Walks and Exercise

Timing your dog’s walks based on the temperature is essential for their safety and comfort during the summer. Walking your dog during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, helps avoid the peak heat and the risk of overheating. Pavement and asphalt can become scorching hot under the midday sun, potentially burning your dog’s paws. By adjusting your walk schedule, you not only protect their paws but also reduce the chances of heat-related illnesses. Additionally, cooler times of the day provide a more enjoyable experience for your dog, allowing them to explore and exercise without the discomfort and dangers of extreme heat.

COOL Equipment and Toys

Gear to keep your pup from overheating

A cooling vest can be a game-changer for dogs during the summer, providing much-needed relief from the heat. These vests are designed to keep your dog’s body temperature down by absorbing and dissipating heat, which helps prevent overheating and heatstroke. Made from lightweight, breathable materials, cooling vests are soaked in water and then put on your dog, where the evaporative cooling effect provides instant comfort. They are particularly beneficial for dogs with thick fur or those prone to overheating. By wearing a cooling vest, your dog can enjoy outdoor activities more comfortably and safely, even on the hottest days. There are a handful of cooling vests on the market! One of Hike Doggie’s favorites is the Ruffwear Swamp Cooler Vest!

Keeping your pup cool while they rest

When most doggies are hot, they have that go-to spot where they go to lie down, like the cool tile floor in the bathroom or next to the AC vent. This may not always be an option if you have to crate your dog or you are traveling. Cooling pads are a wonderful option for the car or crate and come in all kinds of sizes and materials!

If you and your doggie friend do not have access to the indoors, sometimes the only option for your pup is to lay on the ground which can be hot and make cooling down harder. Elevated dog beds are a great way to keep your pup off the warm ground and allow a breeze to flow underneath.

Cool treats for hot dogs

Frozen treats are a fantastic way to keep your dog cool and refreshed during the summer. These icy snacks not only help lower your dog’s body temperature but also provide a fun and engaging way for them to enjoy a tasty reward. Frozen treats can be made from a variety of dog-friendly ingredients, such as pureed fruits, yogurt, or even broth, offering a nutritious and hydrating snack. They also serve as a great tool to keep dogs entertained, as they take longer to consume and can be enjoyed in the shade or after a play session. Incorporating frozen treats into your dog’s summer routine is an excellent way to ensure they stay cool, hydrated, and happy during the hottest months. Here are some easy and yummy recipes for frozen dog treats you can make at home!

Frozen Toys: Long-lasting mental stimulation on a hot day

Too hot for your pup to get the exercise they usually need outside? Try freezable dog toys! Freezable dog toys are an excellent solution for keeping your dog cool and mentally stimulated during the summer. These toys can be filled with water, broth, or dog-friendly purees and then frozen, creating a refreshing and engaging activity for your furry friend. As your dog works to lick, chew, and play with the frozen toy, they benefit from the cooling effect that helps lower their body temperature. Additionally, the challenge of accessing the frozen treats inside provides valuable mental stimulation, preventing boredom and promoting problem-solving skills. Incorporating freezable toys into your dog’s summer routine ensures they stay cool, entertained, and mentally sharp, making hot days more enjoyable for them. A tried and true stuffable toy brand we love: The KONG, which comes in a variety of sizes and shapes.

Make a splash!

Playing in the water is a fantastic cooling activity for dogs during the summer, offering both physical relief from the heat and a fun way to stay active. Whether it’s a splash in a doggie pool, a run through the sprinkler, or a swim in a lake or beach, water play helps to effectively lower your dog’s body temperature. The cooling effect of water not only keeps them comfortable but also prevents overheating and heat-related illnesses. Dogs release heat through their paws, so even just dipping their toes in the water will provide cooling effects! Additionally, water play provides excellent exercise, allowing your dog to burn off energy and stay fit without the risk of overheating that comes with more strenuous activities on hot days. Engaging in water activities ensures your dog remains happy, healthy, and cool throughout the summer.

A well-groomed dog, is a happy dog

Regular grooming is important for all dogs to live their happiest and heathiest lives! Daily brushing ensures that your pup’s coat is healthy which reduces shedding and overheating. Before you grab the clippers and give your doggie that summer haircut, make sure that is what is best for their coat. Most dogs have fur is actually built-in climate control and protects them from the sun! Shaving these dogs could permanently damage their coat. Consult with your local vet or groomer before snipping!

Sun Protection

Protecting your dog from the sun is crucial during the summer to prevent sunburn and overheating. Taking advantage of shade is one of the most effective ways to keep your dog cool and shielded from harmful UV rays. Ensure your dog has access to shaded areas, whether under trees, umbrellas, or specially designed dog tents, especially during peak sunlight hours. Additionally, applying pet-safe sunscreen to vulnerable areas like the nose, ears, and belly can provide extra protection against sunburn. Combining shade and sunscreen not only keeps your dog comfortable but also reduces the risk of skin damage and heat-related health issues, ensuring they stay safe and happy throughout the sunny season.
